Hamburg (German: Hamburg, Low German: Hamborg [ˈhaˑmbɔːχ]) is a city and one of the 16 federal states of Germany.

Located in the north of the country, near the mouth of the Elbe River and the North Sea, Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city (after Berlin) and the country's biggest port. The city covers an area of 755 km2 and has a population of 1.77 million1 , with a metropolitan area of around 3.5 million.

Hamburg was one of the founding members of the Hanseatic League. Today, the city continues to claim this membership as a defining element of its identity. Thus, the city's license plate code is HH, which stands for Hansestadt Hamburg, and its official name is Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg).

It's also a city of active tourism, thanks in particular to its architecture, its network of canals and the green banks of the Alster, a river that forms a man-made lake in the heart of the city.

It boasts numerous theaters and museums, including the famous Kunsthalle and the young Bucerius Kunst Forum, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Hamburg has an entire district dedicated to nightlife: Sankt Pauli and its Reeperbahn.
